LABORATORY FACILITIES

Asbestos TEM Laboratories has the following laboratory equipment available in-house for performing asbestos analysis of bulk, air, water, and soil sample materials:

TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY ANALYTICAL EQUIPMENT

  • Two Philips EM-300 Transmission Electron Microscopes with the following:
Guaranteed point to point resolution of 5 Angstroms or better
Ability to operate at 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 kV accelerating voltages
Equipped with selective area apertures capable of collecting SAED patterns from areas approximately 0.5 microns diameter.
    Complete free lens control.
Minimum electron beam spot size of approximately 115 nanometers.
Scribed viewing screen with 5.0 and 0.5 micron demarcations at standard operating magnification of 18,000X. Calibrated to an accuracy of approximately + 1%.
    Photographic recording capability on 3 1/4" X 4" negatives.

TEM ANALYTICAL ACCESSORIES AND EQUIPMENT UPGRADES

  • Goniometer specimen stage with + 60 degree sample tilting capability
  • Single Tilt and Tilt/Rotate Sample Holders
  • HNU System 5000 Energy Dispersive Multi-Channel X-ray Analyzer (EDX) warranteed at 165 eV FWHM resolution with IBM PC/AT compatible computer interfaces. Computer software includes routines for background subtraction, spectrum comparison to stored standard asbestos spectra, calculation of integrated peak intensities, automated chemical element identification, ZAPF qualitative and quantitative analysis. Generated EDX spectral data can be stored via floppy disk or hard copy output.
